Severe RAM Usage and Browser Crashes When Using LanguageTool Add-on in Firefox

Same problem here. I thought it was a Firefox issue for so long, but I finally narrowed it down to LanguageTool last night. I was pretty mad then.

First of all, there is a workaround. We need to downgrade to 9.0.1 since 10.0.9 is busted.

  1. Go to Grammar and Spell Checker - LanguageTool version history - 25 versions – Add-ons for Firefox (en-US).

  2. Click Download file under Version 9.0.1. Your browser will ask if you want to install the extension. Accept.

  3. Right‑click the LanguageTool icon and select Manage extension.

  4. Toggle automatic updates OFF.

Done. Now keep your eyes peeled for a new version; in the meantime, this should do.
Once a new version drops (and if it comes with a fix), don’t forget to turn automatic updates back ON.

PS: Someone should really report this on their GitHub (https://github.com/languagetool-org/languagetool). I’m sorry, but I can’t be bothered right now. Still a bit mad.
