Why do my commits get a red “x” in the commits?

The the test run is not successful. But you might have to check the commits before you, because the error could be causes not by your, but a different commit.
First compiling locally, then committing and checking the result is (imho) the best method.
Don’t worry. The tests are just cancelled because of a more recent commit. See the message:
This job was cancelled because the “Auto Cancellation” feature is currently enabled, and a more recent build (#20930) for branch master came in while this job was waiting to be processed.
