I’ve been experiencing significant performance issues when using LanguageTool for Desktop (Windows) in combination with New Outlook or Outlook PWA.
The problem mainly occurs with longer email threads, especially those with deep conversation history. While composing a reply, there’s often a multi-second delay before typed characters appear on-screen, which makes it extremely difficult to write smoothly. It’s a frustrating and disorienting experience.
In addition, there is general UI lag when interacting with Outlook. Examples include:
- Clicking into the CC/BCC fields
- Closing email previews
- Navigating between different sections of the app while a problematic email is open
These issues don’t occur when I disable LanguageTool or when I use Outlook Classic (which unfortunately is being phased out). So far, switching back to Classic Outlook has been my only workaround, but it’s not sustainable in the long term.
This performance bottleneck is the only reason I’ve been holding off on upgrading to LanguageTool Premium. I’d really love to commit, as I find LT incredibly useful otherwise.
Would appreciate any insights from the LanguageTool dev team or other users:
- Is this a known issue?
- Are there any mitigations or settings I can tweak to reduce the lag?
- Could this be related to how LT handles larger DOM structures in Electron/PWA environments?
P.S. On a separate note, is there a way to disable the “Prefer Oxford Spelling” setting in LT Desktop? My profile is set to non-Oxford spelling, but the desktop app seems to ignore it.
Thanks in advance for your help!
