Suggestions not applied on web.whatsapp.com – Edge, extension 11.2.3

Since a few days the browser extension no longer applies suggestions on web.whatsapp.com. Checking works: the LT icon appears in the message field, errors are underlined, the popup with suggestions opens. Clicking a suggestion does nothing – the text stays unchanged.

Environment

  • Microsoft Edge (current stable), Windows
  • LanguageTool extension 11.2.3 from the Edge Add-ons Store, site access “On all sites”
  • Browser spell check disabled

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open web.whatsapp.com, open any chat
  2. Type Fehler Fehhler
  3. Click the underlined word, choose the suggestion

Expected: word is replaced
Actual: nothing happens

This worked before. My guess is that WhatsApp changed its message composer (contenteditable) and the replacement no longer reaches it. There is an older thread from Feb 2025 (“LT stopped working on web.whatsapp.com”) that sounds related.

Can anyone confirm this on Chrome or Firefox? And is there a known workaround apart from correcting in the popup editor and copying the text back?

Side note: on this site the LT icon sits right on top of WhatsApp’s send button. A per-site option to move or hide the icon would be welcome.

I can’t confirm on Firefox, still works fine for me.

Reliable workaround: using Ctrl+A then Ctrl+V after copying from the LanguageTool popup bypasses WhatsApp’s rich text input restrictions completely.
