LT Premium & Libreoffice: Does not work

Every time when I start Libreoffice Writer I get the message: “Could not establish Internet connection to https://api.languagetoolplus.com/v2/check. Client error message: (28) Timeout was reached”.

In the setting I have entered the URL, my user name (= e-mail address) and my API Key. I have followed the instructions on this webpage: How To Enable LanguageTool on LibreOffice: Step by Step

It would be great if anyone has an idea how I can fix this problem. Unfortunately the support was not helpful. Thanks!

I have a similar problem. Even though I have installed LT Premium according to the guideline correctly, it doesn’t work whatsoever with LibreOffice. And sometimes I get the same error as you have described. LT support doesn’t help at all with this topic because they say the connection to LibreOffice is not their cup of tea.
So how could you get LT Premium running at all in LibreOffice? I’ve installed Java, what was missing, but I have no other idea what I could do. Thanks.

It looks like that LT is running in LibreOffice though, and that I had just the expectation that it looks like in the web version. Is this LT working in LibreOffice? Thanks.

The free version shows up (sometimes) in LibreOffice Writer and there it looked like in the web version.

This would be nice if it were like this. I’ve just got the error you’ve described. But I don’t see what impact it has.

I think that the URL is wrong. Therefore only the LanguageTool Support could help. But as you said: They are not really interested in helping. The guy from the support team wrote: “I can confirm that the URL should still be up-to-date, and that there are no major changes to it.”
The URL must be exactly correct otherwise it would not work.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I’ve passed this information along to our internal team to explore potential solutions. I’ll keep you updated as soon as I have more information to share.

In the meantime, if you have any additional insights or details, please don’t hesitate to add them to this thread—they’re always valuable.

I use the second URL for the Premium package and it is correct. The error occurs irregularly, but the tool works nevertheless. Does it have any impact when it occurs with you?

Same here with the premium version on macOS 14.6.1 with LibreOffice 24.8.3.2 (AARCH64).

Any news on this issue? I have it since a few days, too… No other internet services has problems, also I did not change anything in my internet setup (even no router update was installed during the last days).

No, I haven’t heard anything from the support. Back to the free version after this subscription expires, I would say. Paying money for nothing is not a good deal.

Hi everyone,

We’re sorry to hear about the issues you’re experiencing with using LanguageTool in LibreOffice and that our Support team hasn’t been able to assist you yet. We’ll investigate internally to understand what went wrong.

Please note that the LibreOffice plugin is developed by the LanguageTool community, not our internal team, as outlined here.

If you have further questions or wish to request a cancellation, please contact us at support@languagetoolplus.com.

Thank you for your understanding.

Thanks for your answer. I totally understand the issues with the LibreOffice plugin cannot be solved by the language tool support team. But I studied computer science and this error occurs to be a problem with the language tool server as a wrong URL or to long round trips or to long time to answer a request. And errors of the language tool server cannot be fixed by the LibreOffice developers.

If this happens with short texts (<1000 characters), long round trips should not be an issue, as the LT server is usually quite fast. In the other hand, maybe the timeout in LibreOffice is just too low. The LT server can easily take a few seconds for text that are >1000 characters. The problem here is that we couldn’t reliably reproduce the issue so far.

It happens even with a new Document and just one typed sentence.
As in another tread the Java version is mentioned, I installed oracle 1.8.0.431, but same issue.
But as it worked before fine with Eclipse 11.0.14 that should also not be the reason.

I am a software developer, so I know that it is always a problem if you cannot reproduce a bug reliably. What I can confirm is that there is already a timeout if the document contains only 14 words (91 characters).

According to this, the timeout at LO seems to be 10 seconds. Not much, but should usually be enough for short texts, unless there’s slow network: core/lingucomponent/source/spellcheck/languagetool/languagetoolimp.cxx at master · LibreOffice/core · GitHub

This problem occurred on all my workspaces at that same time. I have everywhere 1 GB Internet connection with low ping times (<15 ms). And before everything worked fine, even for very long documents.
@Wendat: So it is reproduceable for you?

Could there be anything that blocks the connection, like an overly aggressive security/virus checker? Does the same issue occur if you use the non-premium version (“Option A” at How To Enable LanguageTool on LibreOffice: Step by Step)?

The Free-Version (different URL!) works ! It’s a bit slower than I’m used to from the past month, but it works!

It could be a Windows update from MS Defender maybe? But es I said i have that issue from the same timepoint at different PCs and Laptops, on different Networks. That every PC has installed that update at the same timepoint is unlikely. From what I see some other users had this issue more early, but I did not use LibreOffice in first half of December, so I might be issued, but did not know it. All I know is that it still worked in November.
As this is not a libreoffice-plugin (it’s integrated in libreoffice) I also tried several versions:
LibreOffice_24.2.7.2_Win_x86-64
LibreOffice_25.2.0.1_Win_x86-64
LibreOffice_24.8.4_Win_x86-64
